My friends host a party every month in which they write letters of solidarity to political prisoners. This month is CeCe McDonald’s birthday, so I made her this birthday card. If you haven't heard about her case, CeCe is a black transwoman who survived a hate crime by white supremacists, during which she actually stabbed and killed her attacker. (Click through the photo to read more.) Stay strong, stay beautiful CeCe. <3

Two weeks ago was the Pioneer Valley Zinefest! Kim and I had our own table, where we sold our wares. We met some loooovely folks in Western Mass, where we read our work and bartered with other zinesters for their fine writing and DIY punk swag. I put up some new patches on the Big Cartel, and also my new zine on Latin@ identity called Malcriada (sent upon personal request). I'm really into writing prose right now, but as you can see from the top photo I'm still rocking the wacky caricatures.

Big Cartel account!

So after fighting with PayPal over payments made for my zines-- apparently they need ebay to confirm that I am in fact sending you the zines before they give me the $$$-- I made a Big Cartel account! Here you can buy RGP and other hard copies of my comics. I might do posters soon, too.

Riot Grrrl Problems: the zine

RGP zine cover by suzy_ex
I was getting a lot of questions about RGP from people interested in purchasing it-- and it did so well at my art show that I figured I would print more and sell them online for $4. If you're interested in buying it, please leave me a comment with your email and I'll get back to you. Payments can made via Paypal through the "Donate" button on the right side of my blog. This is first issue of what I hope will be many more to come!

Love,
Suzy X

The yente

Having a facebook is seriously the most annoying thing ever. Everyone in my family has one, they’ve found me, and they’ve pressured me to add relatives I don’t even like. Recently, my Nana’s Jewish best friend/casino buddy in Miami— aka the “yente” who sends me chain letters with sparkly kitten gifs— found me on facebook and got upset that I didn’t add her.

Why don't I just get rid of my internet presence and just keep my cartoon alias quietly on Blogger and Tumblr? Yeah, that's it. I'll do just that.

I love really posi fan mail from really posi folks.

A wonderful person sent me this email today about my wonky paypal button, but really made me feel incredibly giddy:

paypal link on your blog not working?

it may just be my poor excuse for a laptop playing up but i am unable to click through to your paypal account via the link on your blogspot. what's the e-mail address it's linked to? i cannot pledge much but wanted to send what little i have (which will otherwise be squandered on a badly recorded hardcore band's tape or keychain depending on where the internet takes me next).

i hang out with my best friend's 12 year old sister regularly and, at her request, have slowly been exposing her to bands that have helped shape my character and explaining the reasons why.

i find, when talking about riot grrrl bands especially, your comics are a great tool to go alongside with this without confusing her with theory and big words, leaving room for her to draw her own conclusions and have fun while doing so (comics are cool!). so thank you for that. i'm bring her along to her first march tomorrow (slutwalk) and she has printed out your victim blaming comic and stuck it onto her banner :)

My response:

Hi ___!

Your message actually had me tear up a bit. I'm really, really happy that you think my work has made a difference. I am a big fan of making feminism more accessible, especially to young folks. I hope that both of you have a fuckin' rad time at Slutwalk, and I totally appreciate any kind of help you can offer! I realize the donate button on my site was actually locked, but I unlocked it and tested it so it should work now.

Thank you so much for your kind words. They really mean a lot to me. <3

In solidarity,
Suzy X

MY THESIS IS DONE

Leave me a message if you want access to the download-- I'm being uber-selective about who gets to see it.

At last, I get my life back. Well, at least after my three final papers. Graduation can't come soon enough.

A thank you card to my thesis advisor, Ben Katchor, who always complains that I focus too much on my characters instead of the settings

It went exceedingly well this year.
Also, just in time for the march-- our new and *improved* sexual assault policy has been approved by the Board of Trustees. Thank you SAFER and Feminist Collective for making it happen!

A gem from last summer

I miss the summer. I drew sillier cartoons then.
And sometimes drew things like this.

This was my feminist reading group's commemoration of the 4th of July. You can find this drawing somewhere on the 2nd floor of 538 Johnson. If you ever go to a show there, keep an eye out.

AFTER THE REV

One of the most painful parts about writing my thesis on feminist activism, is documenting all the idiotic things people have said. Namely, my leftie ex-boyfriends. Also known as MANARCHISTS.

aftertherev

You know, because actually confronting your own white male privilege is a whole lot easier after the revolution. Until then, you can just convieniently jot it down at the bottom of your to-do list.

The Lavendar Menace: An Evolution

(Part of The League series)

The League of Extraordinary Feminists

Is a project I'm starting with my partner (in crime) Kim-- you can see her comics here

Anyway, it's a series we have going about several different feminist characters that illustrate stereotypes within feminist culture. For example: the Riot Grrrl, the liberal feminist Mega Mom, the college professor known as Wonder Womanist, the radical lesbian Lavender Menace, the Radical Cheerleader, and even the postmodern androgynous person known as Po-Mo. They're even better illustrated.

So in the meantime, look out for some of these. As if I'm not already superbusy with my senior thesis, I can't help but try and turn feminist theory into comedy whenever I have time to spare.

GOOD POWER VS. BAD POWER

Victim Blaming cartoon for SAFER

Blaming a victim of rape is somewhat like blaming the victim of any other violent crime. This is not to trivialize it, or to even make the parallel of women’s bodies=property. But think about how absurd it would be to so many people if we started holding property owners accountable for property theft. Property is serious to so many people. They would be up in arms about it, right? Well, we should be up in arms about victim blaming too. Our bodies should be taken seriously, in fact more serious than any material object. Survivors deserve much better than this.

Interning at SAFER (Students Active For Ending Rape)

I spent the last 6 months interning for an anti-rape organization called SAFER, based in NYC. They work closely with student groups to help further the cause of better policies and educational programs regarding sexual assault. Seeing as sexual assault is much more likely to occur in college campuses, the people at SAFER make it a point to target such a demographic and work as allies with students who oppose sexual assault. I've created two animated videos for them regarding activist etiquette and policy reform, which you can find below:

RECRUITMENT & RETENTION: The SAFER Way to Building A Movement

WHY POLICY?

I'm so incredibly grateful to have worked with such a positive organization. They have not only given me an outlet for my political and artistic expression, but they have helped me and other organizers at my school tackle institutional problems with confidence. Thank you, SAFER!
